Best bedtime before an exam: the student sleep calculator Form SC-8
First exam at 8 AM and the notes are still warm. Five cycles back from the alarm says lights out at 12:15 AM: a full night's architecture, not a heroic all-nighter. An all-nighter buys you tomorrow's grogginess with interest; the ledger compounds sleep, not cramming.

A rule of thumb, not medical advice. This calculator uses average sleep-cycle lengths to estimate good bedtimes. It doesn’t know you, can’t diagnose anything, and doesn’t promise how you’ll feel. If sleep is a real problem, talk to a doctor — not a ledger.

How the math works Form SC-8
Five 90-minute cycles plus 15 minutes to fall asleep, counted back from an 8:00 AM exam: lights out at 12:15 AM, with 10:45 PM for the full six and 1:45 AM as the four-cycle floor. Every listed time is a cycle boundary, so the alarm catches you between cycles rather than in the middle of deep sleep.
That timing matters more than it looks: memory consolidation, the brain filing what you studied into retrievable recall, happens during deep sleep and REM. Ninety minutes is the species average, not your personal constant; the three options bracket the wobble.
Common questions Form SC-8
Is it better to sleep or study all night before an exam?
Sleep. And it's not close. Memory consolidation happens during deep sleep and REM: the studying you did only becomes retrievable recall after your brain files it overnight. An all-nighter buys you tomorrow's grogginess with interest while skipping the filing. Five cycles beats five extra hours of staring at notes.
How many cycles do I need before an 8 AM exam?
Five: in bed by 12:15 AM for a 7h 45m night that ends between cycles. Four cycles (1:45 AM) is the honest floor, survivable once, not a strategy. Six (10:45 PM) is the full rest if your notes are already in good shape.
What time should I stop studying?
Wind down 30 to 45 minutes before your target bedtime: last pass over the summary sheet, then lights low, then out. Cramming right up to lights-out keeps the brain in filing mode when it should be powering down, and the 12:15 AM target assumes you're actually drifting off, not closing the laptop.
Can a nap make up for a short night?
Partly. A 20-minute nap the next afternoon clears the fog without wrecking the next night's sleep; a 90-minute nap completes a full cycle and repays more of the debt. Neither fully repays a 4-cycle night. The ledger records the shortfall and collects it as slower recall by mid-afternoon.
