Weighted grade calculator: every component, honestly weighted

Your 85% homework average means nothing until it is weighted: homework 20% at 85, quizzes 15% at 78, midterm 25% at 72, final 40% unplayed. Your true current average is 77.83%, and an 80% finish needs 83.2% on the final. Build your own course below.

The #1 student error: averaging without weights

The naive average of 85, 78, and 72 is 78.33, close to the true 77.83 by luck. The error bites when the weights are uneven: a 95% homework average at 10% weight and a 65% midterm at 40% weight average to 80% naively and 71% truly. Students plan their studying off the naive number and discover the true one on the transcript. The builder above exists to make that mistake impossible: every score enters with its weight attached.

Where to find your weights

Your syllabus's grading section is the contract; your LMS gradebook (Canvas, Blackboard) usually shows the same weights in the sidebar. Two things to verify while you are there: dropped scores (a dropped lowest quiz raises the category average before weighting), and whether the weights sum to 100 (if they sum to 95, something ungraded is hiding in the last 5 points). Enter exactly what the syllabus says; the calculator does the rest.

The worked example carries a quiet warning: a strong homework average (85%) masked a weak midterm (72%), and the weighted truth (77.83%) is what the final must climb from. Check your own masking before the exam, not after.

Estimates, not academic advice. Uses the weights and scores you enter. Confirm against your syllabus.

Common questions

How do I calculate my weighted grade?

Multiply each category score by its weight, add the results, and divide by the total weight so far. 85% homework at 20% weight banks 17 points, not 85.

What is the difference between a weighted and unweighted average?

The unweighted average treats every score equally; the weighted average treats them by their syllabus weights. With uneven weights the two can differ by 5–10 points.

Do my weights have to add to 100%?

Yes, for the final grade. If your entered weights sum to less, the missing percent is an ungraded category hiding somewhere in the syllabus.

How do dropped scores affect the weighted grade?

They raise the category average before weighting: dropping one 40% quiz can lift a quiz category 3–5 points, which the weight then multiplies.

What final score do I need with my current weighted average?

For the example course: 83.2% for an 80% finish. Enter your categories above; the builder computes it from your real weights.
