Overtime calculator: what time-and-a-half actually pays
At $18 an hour and 47 hours this week, your paycheck is $909: $720 of regular pay plus $189 of overtime at $27 an hour. The last 7 hours pay 50% more than the first 40, which is the whole reason the week feels different from the wage.

The federal rule behind the math
Under the Fair Labor Standards Act, non-exempt employees earn at least 1.5 times their regular rate for hours over 40 in a single workweek. "Workweek" is the key unit: it is not hours over 8 in a day (unless your state says so, as California does), and hours do not carry across weeks. Salaried workers can be non-exempt too: divide the weekly salary by 40 for the implied hourly rate, then multiply by 1.5 for the overtime rate. A $900-a-week salaried non-exempt employee working 47 hours earns $900 + 7 × $33.75 = $1,136.25.
The most common employer error is straight time on overtime hours: paying the regular rate for hours over 40, or averaging two weeks together to dodge the threshold. If your stub shows 47 hours at a single rate, the 7 hours at the premium are missing. The calculator above is the check.

Common questions
How is overtime pay calculated?
Hours over 40 in a workweek are paid at 1.5 times your regular hourly rate: overtime pay = overtime hours × rate × 1.5.
Do salaried employees get overtime?
Salaried non-exempt employees do. Divide the weekly salary by 40 for the implied hourly rate, then pay 1.5 times that rate for hours over 40.
Is overtime based on the day or the week?
Federally, the week: hours over 40 in a single workweek. Some states add daily overtime rules (California requires it after 8 hours in a day).
