How Much Does It Cost to Move in 2026?
Local moves run $500 to $3,500 or more; long-distance moves run $1,500 to $8,500 or more. Here is what each dollar buys, a 2-bedroom priced at four distances, and how to read a quote without getting burned.

The short answer
Moving in 2026 costs $500 to $3,500 or more for a local move (under 100 miles) and $1,500 to $8,500 or more for a long-distance move, according to FreightWaves' 2026 moving cost calculator. Cross-country moves for a 3-to-4-bedroom home run $5,000 to $12,000 or more. The American Moving & Storage Association puts the national average interstate move at $4,890 (2025 report, via MoveSmart). Those are wide bands because a move's price is really three different purchases wearing one trench coat: labor, weight, and timing.

What "local" and "long-distance" actually mean
The 100-mile line is the industry's real border, not just a label. Under 100 miles, movers price by the hour: a crew rate per mover per hour times the hours the job takes, plus a truck and travel fee. MoveSmart's 2026 FAQ publishes the going band at $25 to $50 per mover per hour. Past 100 miles, the pricing model flips entirely to weight and distance: MoveSmart cites $0.50 to $1.00 per pound or $3 to $7 per mile as the long-distance bands. This is why a quote can jump sharply when your move crosses that line. It is not a scam; it is a different business model, closer to freight than to hourly labor.
That flip also explains why long-distance quotes ask for an inventory or a virtual survey while local quotes barely need your address. The mover is estimating the weight of everything you own, because weight is what you are paying for.
A 2-bedroom, priced at four distances
Abstract bands are hard to budget against, so here is one concrete household — a 2-bedroom apartment, about 3,500 pounds of belongings — priced three ways at four distances, in October (a mid-season month), using this site's published moving model:
| Distance | Full-service movers | Moving container | Rental truck (DIY) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 25 miles (local) | $936 | $655 | $214 |
| 300 miles (regional) | $2,808 | $2,122 | $604 |
| 1,000 miles (long-distance) | $4,264 | $2,704 | $1,594 |
| 2,500 miles (cross-country) | $7,384 | $3,952 | $3,717 |
Two patterns worth noticing. First, the full-service column roughly doubles each time the distance triples. Second, the truck column stays dramatically cheaper until the cross-country row, where the gap narrows: a one-way truck rental for 2,500 miles is itself a $3,717 proposition once mileage and fuel are counted. Distance punishes every option, but it punishes the cheap ones proportionally more.
What the price is made of
Every moving quote is built from the same parts list. Knowing the parts is what lets you read a quote instead of just reacting to the total.
- Labor: the crew, the hours, the stairs. A studio takes about 3 crew-hours of loading; a 4-bedroom takes about 9. Anything above the second floor, or a long walk from door to truck, adds paid time.
- Weight and distance: the long-distance core. More pounds and more miles, more money, with very little negotiation room on the rate itself.
- Timing: June runs about 31 percent above December on MoveSmart's 2026 seasonal index. Month-end and weekends cost more than mid-month Tuesdays.
- Packing: full packing service runs $500 to $2,000 depending on home size (UrbanMatter's 2026 Canada guide; the US bands match). A 2-bedroom sits around $1,100.
- Storage: about $100 to $300 a month if your dates do not line up.
- Protection: basic released-value coverage ($0.60 per pound) is included by law. Full-value protection costs about 1 percent of your goods' declared value (FreightWaves), so $300 on $30,000 of belongings.
- Access fees: stairs, elevators, long carries, shuttle trucks when the big rig cannot reach your street. Ask about each one before signing.
Three ways to move, three price tags
Full-service movers do everything: pack (if you pay for it), load, drive, unload. MyMovingJourney's 2026 calculator puts professional moves at $435 to $2,550 local and $1,000 to $11,600-plus long-distance. You are buying back your time and your back.
Moving containers split the job: you pack and load, the company drives. MyMovingJourney prices containers at $422 to $766 local and $856 to $3,950 long-distance. The middle path, and often the best value for 500-to-1,500-mile moves.
Rental trucks are the do-everything-yourself option: $29 to $489 local at the headline rate, but the real number includes per-mile charges and fuel. For long distances, budget the rental plus roughly $1.10 a mile plus fuel at 10 miles per gallon.
For local moves you are buying labor (crew hours); for long-distance moves you are buying weight (pounds). That is why decluttering barely dents a local quote but meaningfully cuts a cross-country one: every 500 pounds you do not ship saves about $300 on a long-distance full-service quote. Sell the heavy things before you move them.
How to read a quote without getting burned
Get three written estimates after an in-home or virtual survey; phone quotes from a room count are fiction. Ask whether the quote is binding (the price is the price) or non-binding (it can rise, within federal limits, if the weight was underestimated). Verify the company's USDOT number in the FMCSA SAFER database before you sign anything — MoveSmart's FAQ notes the FMCSA receives over 4,000 consumer complaints a year against household-goods movers, and the unlicensed ones are the ones that hold belongings hostage for extra cash. Never pay the full amount upfront, and get every fee in the parts list above named in writing.
