The per-person scoreboard
Cooking Thanksgiving dinner from the Farm Bureau's classic menu costs $5.52 a person ($55.18 for ten). Here is what the same seat costs when someone else cooks it, from 2026 store menus compiled by FinanceBuzz:

| Cracker Barrel Heat & Serve | $11.00 | $110.00 | +$54.82 |

| Restaurant (Long Island sample) | $60.98 | $609.80 | +$554.62 |
*Costco's $199.99 package serves 8; the for-10 figure is scaled. Restaurant figure is the median of a 12-restaurant Long Island sample (range $44-$87/adult) reported by heritagediner.com — a regional example, not a national average. Store prices from FinanceBuzz's September 2026 comparison; menus and serving sizes vary.
Cooking wins every row, and it is not close: even the cheapest catering (Sam's Club) costs 81 percent more per person than the homemade menu, and Whole Foods costs nearly four times as much. The $157.32 gap between cooking and Whole Foods for ten people is almost three full homemade Thanksgivings.
What catering actually buys
The premium is not food; it is hours. A from-scratch Thanksgiving is a two-day project: shopping, thawing, prep, a full day of oven management, and the cleanup. Catering collapses that to reheating. For a host whose alternative is ten hours of labor, the Sam's Club $44.82 premium over cooking prices the saved day at under $5 an hour — the best-paid "time off" on the table. The Whole Foods $157.32 premium prices it at about $16 an hour. The restaurant median ($554.62 over cooking) prices it at $55 an hour, and throws in zero dishes.
Catering also buys predictability. The homemade number assumes average cooking skill and no disasters; a dry bird or a forgotten pie has no line item. The catered number is fixed. For first-time hosts, that insurance has real value beyond the dollars.
When catering wins outright
Three cases flip the math. First, small tables: the Farm Bureau menu is priced for ten, and a table of four still needs most of a turkey. Cooking for four at survey prices runs about $6 to $7 a person once the bird's indivisibility is counted, while Cracker Barrel's $11-a-person bundle includes variety a small table cannot economically produce. Second, no kitchen capacity: oven space is the binding constraint on big tables, and a catered bird frees it. Third, the loss-leader bundle: Walmart's and Aldi's promotional $40-for-ten bundles (under $4 a person) undercut even homemade — the one row where buying beats cooking, available for about a week.
The catering market has a clear price cliff: everything under $15 a person (Sam's Club, Cracker Barrel, Safeway, Albertsons, Hy-Vee) is a heat-and-eat commodity competing with your oven, while everything above $18 (Wegmans, Kroger, Walmart, Whole Foods, Costco) is selling brand and ingredient story — free-range, all-natural, organic. The food on the plate differs less than the marketing around it. And the commodity tier has a secret: at $10 to $11 a person, Sam's Club and Cracker Barrel land at roughly twice the homemade cost. That 2x multiple is the market's honest price for "we cooked, you reheat." Above 2x, you are paying for the label; below it, in the $4 loss-leader bundle, the store is paying you to walk in.
The hybrid play
The best value on the table is rarely all-or-nothing. The survey's itemized menu makes the hybrid explicit: cook the turkey and the cheap wheat lines (rolls, stuffing, pie) where homemade is both better and cheaper, and buy the lines where the store wins — the veggie tray (a convenience markup), the second pie (about $7 premade versus $9.40 in ingredients), the cranberry sauce. Cheapism's rule of thumb holds: buy the dishes that are costly to make from scratch, cook the rest. A hybrid table lands around $6 to $7 a person with half the labor of full homemade — the efficient frontier of the holiday.
The sides-only order: the caterer's secret menu
The smartest catering move is not the full meal — it is the sides. Whole Foods' 2025 a la carte prices show why: herb stuffing at $10.99 a pound, garlic mashed potatoes at $9.99, macaroni and cheese at $11.99, green bean almondine at $12.99, roasted sweet potatoes with pecans at $12.49. A pound of each of the five is $58.45 and covers the side dishes for ten people — $5.85 a person for the sides, while you roast the $21.50 bird yourself. Total table: roughly $80 for ten, or $8.00 a person, with the centerpiece homemade and the labor-intensive sides outsourced. That beats every full-meal catering option on the scoreboard except Sam's Club and Cracker Barrel, and it beats them on quality. The sides are where home kitchens lose the most time (five pots, one oven) and where caterers have the least markup over homemade.
The leftovers ledger
One cost the per-person table hides: leftovers. A homemade 16-pound bird for ten yields roughly two extra meals per person — the Friday sandwiches, the turkey soup, the pot pie. Valued at even $4 a meal (a conservative replacement cost), that is $8 of value per person the restaurant meal does not provide, and that the catered meal provides only partially (catered portions are tighter; there is less bird left). Add the leftovers back in and the homemade plate's effective cost falls from $5.52 toward $4 a person — below even the loss-leader bundle. The restaurant's $60.98 plate, with no leftovers, stays $60.98. This is the quiet reason the homemade Thanksgiving has survived every convenience challenger: it is two holidays for the price of one.
The restaurant question
Dining out is a different product, not a different price. The Long Island sample's $44-to-$87 range (median $60.98 an adult) buys zero cooking, zero cleanup, and zero leftovers — the leftovers are the hidden cost of the restaurant, worth roughly a second meal per person. For ten people the restaurant median is $609.80 against $55.18 homemade: eleven times the price. It is the right choice exactly when the holiday is about the gathering and not the table, and the wrong choice on every other axis.
Catering vs cooking questions
- Is it cheaper to cook Thanksgiving dinner or buy it premade?
- Cooking is cheaper in every standard comparison: $5.52 a person homemade versus $10 (Sam's Club), $11 (Cracker Barrel), $18.50-$25 (Wegmans through Costco), and $21.25 (Whole Foods). The one exception is Walmart's and Aldi's promotional $40-for-ten bundles at under $4 a person.
- How much does Whole Foods Thanksgiving catering cost?
- Whole Foods' 2026 meal kit runs $169.99 for 8 ($21.25 per person), per FinanceBuzz's September 2026 comparison. Larger classic turkey dinners were listed at $189.99-$219.99 for 8-12 in 2025.

- Cracker Barrel's Heat & Serve Holiday Family Meal To Go is $110 for up to 10 people ($11 per person), including two turkey breasts, cornbread stuffing, gravy, cranberry relish, rolls, two pies, and three sides.
- When does catering beat cooking for Thanksgiving?
